After a decade inside Marvel and DC, I had a clear read on why the characters didn't look like me: almost no Black people were making acquisition decisions. The pipeline reflected the room. I couldn't change the room from the inside, so I changed what came from the outside.
The inverse of the problem was the premise. If the industry produced almost no Black characters because there were almost no Black decision-makers, the question became: what would a world look like if being Black wasn't the exception but the rule?
I wrote the book I couldn't find. Then I took it directly to the audience instead of back through the same gatekeepers.
